Use water as your medium or inspiration.
My cat prefers drinking out of the tub to her cat dish and I've always wanted to take a stab at making a fountain. Combine those two ideas and you get something completely impractical.
A picture of a fountain is pretty boring so I made an animated gif and added a wind up fish for some flare.
*Not sure why the site makes it jump at the end, created two and both ended up that way.
The dishes were purchased from IKEA. The water pump came from Lowe's and was the smallest one available. Unfortunately the diameter of the tubing needed was bigger than I had hoped for and much harder to position and hide.
I also bought a new awesome toy, a Dremel 7700, to do the hole in the bottom of the smallest bowl. I tried it out last night with a bit that said it would work on hard surfaces but I ended up destroying the bit AND the Dremel. It was only a day old and I spent the $5 on a year warranty so I took it back.
This time I did some research online; I found a diamond bit (663DR Glass Drilling Bit) that comes with cutting oil. Originally Dremel didn't offer a glass drilling bit because... "We do not have an accessory bit that will drill through glass. Working with glass is exceptionally hot. It requires a bath or wash on the accessory and the material. We do not recommend using a bath/wash with our tool, as the centrifugal force will send the liquid up the shaft of the tool into the motor".
Now no one want's liquid centrifugally forced up their shaft (amiright fellas?) so do what Dr. Ruth says and lube up your bit with the oil.
*I realized after posting this that using Dr Ruth instead of Dr Drew really dates me but screw it, it's way funnier to hear her say penis AND I already photoshopped the KY into her hand.
Trying to position things was a bit of a pain and less grandiose than I had planned but I blame it on my choice of the dish on bottom (amiright gay fellas?). I should have bought a square one so the pump could fit in a corner vs the middle.
100:1 odds that the cat doesn't go near this damn thing.
Update: Too bad you didn't take me up on those odds. Less than 30 minutes after putting out the dish the cat was in drinking away. I even got a pic:
Sorry for the quality of the image, my computer isn't working; I kept yelling "Enhance" but nothing happened... if you know how to fix this issue let me know.
You bought a dremel! The fountain looks awesome I'm so sad I can't come see in person so easily. :(
